The WLAC Board is disappointed to announce that our annual Judges’ Dinner for 2020 has been canceled to ensure the safety of all who would attend.

With that door closed, we open a window of hope to young women graduating from law school in this difficult time. This year, we take the unprecedented step of tripling the number of recipients of our Margaret A. Gannon (“MAG”) Legal Education StipendThe MAG Stipend is a fund dedicated to providing financial support to graduating law students who find themselves in great need during their bar studies.  We have already awarded four MAG Stipends to outstanding women in our community.  We will now expand our reach to others in need.

We invite you to empower women graduating during a time of financial crisis and sparse opportunity.  Please donate what you would have paid for your ticket, what you would have pledged as a sponsor, whatever you can spare, to encourage young attorneys entering the profession in the face of so many challenges.

We know that next year our Judges’ Dinner will be a spectacular time to celebrate the way we came together to support the ambition of women in a time of adversity.  Please be a part of it.

If you want a glimpse of the good that these scholarships provide, we invite you to congratulate the first four recipients of the MAG StipendILEANA ARANDA (U.C. Hastings), NORJMOO BATTULGA (Golden Gate), CHLOE CZABARANEK (Santa Clara), and LARISSA DAVIS (U.C. Berkeley).  Read more about these extraordinary women.

A Voice for Women in the Law Since 1980

Winter 2020 Margaret A. Gannon Legal Education Stipend Application

Purpose. Women Lawyers of Alameda County (WLAC) established the Margaret A. Gannon legal education stipend fund to provide financial assistance to help offset some of the costs of a bar review course (or related study materials) for law students and graduates who are preparing to take the California Bar Exam. This year, WLAC is awarding a second round of stipends in light of the significant hardships many recent law school graduates are facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including a delayed bar exam, delayed start dates for existing job offers, revoked job offers, and a difficult legal market.

Eligibility. Individuals eligible to receive a WLAC Margaret A. Gannon legal education stipend must: (1) join WLAC before or at the time of submitting a stipend application (membership link: https://wlaconline.org/membership-account/membership-levels/); (2) have taken the October 2020 California Bar Exam or registered to take the February 2021 bar exam; (3) not currently be a member of any state bar; and (4) intend to pursue a legal career. Individuals who applied for, but did not receive, the stipend in Spring 2020 may resubmit their application.

Funding. Up to four $2000 stipends will be awarded in early 2021 and recognized on the WLAC website. Stipend recipients will also be recognized at the WLAC Spring Member Reception, tentatively set in early May 2021, or the annual Judge’s Dinner in October 2021, depending on the ability to hold in-person events.

Application. Please email one PDF file that contains: (1) the latest version of your resume including your best contact information; (2) a personal statement (limited to no more than 600 words) describing your professional goals, your connection to Alameda County, your involvement with women’s issues— particularly with law-related organizations, such as WLAC, and why receiving this stipend would be important to you – particularly the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on your post-graduation plans; and (3) include the following language at the bottom of your personal statement, along with your dated signature:

Statement of Certification. The information given by me on the attached resume and this personal statement is accurate and complete to the best of my knowledge. I understand that all application materials submitted will become the property of WLAC.

Signature Date
