2025 Scholarship Recipients

  • Angélica César, a J.D. Candidate at UC Berkeley School of Law, is a passionate advocate for human rights and social justice. As a proud first-generation student and daughter of immigrants, she has dedicated her legal education to advancing protections for immigrant communities through pro bono work, advocacy, and scholarship.

    At Berkeley Law, Angélica has served as Student Body Co-President, Co-Director of the Berkeley Immigration Group, Student Advocate for the Post-Conviction Advocacy Project, a Clinical Student for the Human Rights Clinic, and an Executive Editor for the California Law Review.

    After graduation, she will serve as the 2025–2027 Aryeh Neier Fellow for Human Rights Watch and ACLU National, where she will continue her commitment to human rights and civil liberties. She is deeply grateful to the Women Lawyers of Alameda County for their generous support of aspiring attorneys!

  • Brooke Harris is a J.D. Candidate (3L) at UC Law SF and a committed advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and family law. She has dedicated her law school career to pro bono service, reproductive justice, and expanding access to critical legal resources for the LGBTQ+ community. She has led and co-founded multiple pro bono projects, founded the If/When/How x OUTlaw's Healthcare Directives Clinic in 2024/2025, founded the SF LGBT Center x OUTlaw's Healthcare Directives Clinic in 2023/2024, and served as President of If/When/How (24-25') and Co-President of OUTlaw (23-24'). After graduation, she plans to continue her advocacy through family law practice and ongoing LGBTQ+ and reproductive justice pro bono work.

  • JoAnne “Jo-Joe” Lee is an enrolled citizen of the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians of California and a 3L at UC Davis School of Law- King Hall. She serves as the Vice President of the National Native American Law Students Association, and as a Law Clerk for the California Tribal Families Coalition (CTFC). She received her Master of Social Work from Columbia University where she was a 2021-2022 Fisher Cummings Research and Policy Fellow for the Office on Trafficking In Persons addressing barriers to social services for people with lived experience in trafficking including Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP). She is the Executive Director of Urban Reziliency, a 501(c)(3) focused on ameliorating homelessness within the Bay Area for Black and Native youth. Once she receives her Juris Doctor Degree and is admitted to the California State Bar, she will return to CTFC and serve as their Policy and Legislation Fellow, ensuring that the ICWA is included in any policy recommendations that may impact Native children. Jo-Joe will assist Native Peoples at a policy and legal level to implement positive change within systems that have treated their sovereignties and autonomies unjustly.

  • Katelyn Donaldson is currently a third year J.D. Candidate at American University Washington College of Law in Washington, DC. After graduating and taking the July 2025 CA Bar Exam, she will begin a Public Interest Fellowship at Tycko & Zavareei LLP in Oakland, CA. She is excited to use litigation as a tool to gain remittance for harmed individuals and hold corporations accountable.

    In law school, Katelyn interned at the Department of Labor, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and Levy Firestone Muse LLP. Currently, she is representing a death row prisoner and an asylum seeker through the International Human Rights Law Clinic at American University. Prior to law school, Katelyn received her B.A. from Ohio State University and was a child support caseworker in Columbus, OH.

  • Mariam Daoud is a J.D. candidate at USC Gould School of Law and is a graduate of UC Berkeley. She has extensive experience in international human rights, having worked on asylum cases and advocacy efforts through USC’s International Human Rights Clinic. Her legal interests lie at the intersection of policy, advocacy, and litigation, with a focus on addressing systemic inequalities. She is particularly interested in issues related to human rights, employment law, and regulatory compliance. In her free time, Mariam enjoys listening to audiobooks, playing pickleball, and watching critically acclaimed television!

2025 MARGARET A. GANNON LEGAL EDUCATION STIPEND

Women Lawyers of Alameda County (WLAC) established the Margaret A. Gannon legal education stipend fund to provide financial assistance to help offset some of the costs of a bar review course (or related study materials) for law students and graduates who are preparing to take the July California Bar Exam.

Up to four $2000 stipends will be awarded at the WLAC Spring Reception on April 24, 2025.

  • Individuals eligible to receive a WLAC Margaret A. Gannon legal education stipend must:

    (1) Join WLAC before or at the time of submitting a stipend application;

    (2) Have already applied to take the upcoming July California Bar Exam;

    (3) Not currently be a member of any state bar; and

    (4) Intend to pursue a legal career.

  • A one-page personal statement (limited to no more than 800 words) describing your professional goals and also your involvement with women’s issues— particularly with law-related organizations, such as WLAC. Please include your connection, if any, to Alameda County; and why receiving this stipend would be important to you, including your financial need, if any.

  • Please email one PDF file that contains:

    (2) The personal statement; and

    (3) Include the following language at the bottom of your personal statement, along with your dated signature:

THE 2025 KAZAN MCCLAIN PARTNERS’ FOUNDATION BAR STUDY SCHOLARSHIP

The Kazan McClain Partners’ Foundation Bar Study Scholarship was created in 2023 to provide financial assistance to law students to help offset the cost of a bar preparation course. This scholarship supports the values shared by Women Lawyers of Alameda County (WLAC) and represents the Foundation’s mission statement. The Kazan McClain Partners’ Foundation was formed in 1994 and over the years has disbursed over $25 million in grants to a wide array of community and civic organizations, including $6 million for mesothelioma research. Its mission is to benefit the public through grants to organizations and individuals, including enhancing access to, participation in, and education about the legal system and governmental processes.

This $4,000 scholarship will be awarded to the top recipient based on their exceptional academic achievements and demonstrated commitment to the study of law.

The recipient will be awarded at the WLAC Spring Reception on April 24, 2025.

RHODA AND JUDGE STUART HING SCHOLARSHIP

DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 19, 2025

The WLAC/Rhoda and Judge Stuart Hing Scholarship was created in 2018.  As an attorney, Judge Hing was a Board member of WLAC, and even after his appointment to the Alameda County Superior Court in 2008, he continued to serve for almost a decade as a judicial liaison to the Board.  This Scholarship represents a continuing commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equality, values shared by WLAC and the Stuart and Rhoda Hing Charitable Trust.

Women Lawyers of Alameda County is pleased to announce that we will again be awarding one $5,000 law student scholarship, courtesy of the Stuart and Rhoda Hing Charitable Trust. The scholarship will be presented at the WLAC Annual Judges’ Reception on October 23, 2025.

  • Submit a personal statement addressing why the candidate exemplifies the requirements below:

    1. Diverse (Demonstrate two or more intersecting background factors: e.g. gender, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, ect.);

    2. A law student (must have completed at least one year of law school and is currently in good standing);

    3. An individual with a demonstrated commitment to advocating for issues impacting women and/or the advancement of women in the legal profession;

    4. Engaged in a leadership role in her/his/their community or demonstrates significant leadership potential;

    5. Actively engaged in the Alameda County legal community; and

    6. Able to attend the WLAC Annual Judges’ Reception to receive the Scholarship.
